  • PAYEE account unknown!!

Well ... I tried to set up a new recipient for Durham County Council (using the sort code and acc number on their letter). Guess what?? MY bank can't find them :0

I even tried searching for them by name (see attachment)

    - - - Updated - - -

I've put in an online complaint ... but rest assured I will be fighting ANY liability order (etc...) that will be issued as a result of late payment

this seems dodgy to me tho'
          Paying through your bank
If you pay through the your bank on the internet or by standing order, please note that our account details have changed.
Why have they had to change accounts??

Perhaps because the local authority tried screwing the bank like it does its council taxpaying customers and the bank refused to do business with it.

I did a dummy run with my bank and it came up with these details, though I'd think these are the old ones:

            Sort code: 08-90-70
            Account number: 61646092

well ... I'm not paying until they assure me that the account details are correct (as in MY bank finds them as a business account)

                  Re: PAYEE account unknown!!

The problem you have is that if a bank account is not found by your bank it doesn't in itself indicate anything other than your bank doesn't display the details , it doesn't mean it's not a valid account or that there is any error on the council's side.

From a point of view of payment they could take action in the meantime on the basis that payment is available by other methods - you'd then need to argue the point with them.

well ... the saga goes on

I've been paying my CT on time through paypoint, but have still not had a response to my complaint.

Instead, I've had two more CT bills sent in the last week (one for almost 1/4 of the original and the other for 3/4 per month). Both of these are (they say) due to a change in my income ~ although there's been NO change at all since the first bill ~ so I'm now unsure what to do.

I'll be paying the later dated bill (which happens to be the cheapest) until they tell me different

Just make the sure that the latest one is the latest - I've seen plenty of confusion where multiple letters have been received and it's caused problems as they've got mixed up.

They must have received some automatic notification from somewhere so they've updated the Council Tax Reduction (CTR) that's in payment - other than a couple of disregards CTR is the only income related item that affects Council Tax. Where CTR has been altered then a Council Tax Demand Notice would be issued but they will also issue an award letter showing the reasons for the adjustment - other than the award letter the only people who can say what the adjustment was are the council.

What about giving your council chief a poke?

When we had an issue with our local council tax office I emailed our local chap, rattled him a bit and hey presto -sorted.
Worth a try and good luck.
