Sorry to reply on here I'm new and don't know how to start my own thread 😂😂

I dunno what todo I had a letter from Jacobs hand posted that I had to pay £500 within 24 hours or they would take my goods the debt first started at £250 the week before I had to battle hard with the guy and he said he's spoke to head office and they agreed I could pay £50 a week till £500 was paid!
It was a struggle cause I've got 5 children to feed ect but I paid it

2 weeks later I received another letter from a different agent saying I had to pay £235 within 7 days (council tax again) I phoned Jacobs they said there's nothing they can do as the debt has already gone out with an agent! Yesterday I received the 24 hours notice letter now stating I owe £467.00 and not £235 I've phoned and spoke to the agent trying to set up a plan and he's refused he said it has to be paid in full.

I was worrying what todo so my nana also phoned and spoke to him and said if she paid the £235 that was owed before the charges could he squash the charges he said no if he takes the £235 he could hold it back a week or 2 but the rest had to be paid in full

Sorry about the long essay but I don't know what todo my nanas meant to be ringing back at dinner but she will probably try pay the full £467.00 but it's just wrong
    Thanks

        Leanne,

It is important that you get a proper breakdown of what is owed as this is very confusing indeed. You also need to know how much has ben charged in bailiff fees.

          Re: Leanne: Jacobs bailiff

I've emailed the council and asked them if anything can be done without me having to pay all the charges again the agent from Jacobs have doubled the debt in a week and said he can't undo it as I'd had my 7 days notice.
I've also emailed citizen advice to see if they can help at all but won't hear from anyone now till after bank holiday 😒 xx

the 1st debt that ended up at £500 was all from £10.76 I owed the council tax office from June last year as I got married and money was stopped for almost 8 weeks as had to put a joint claim in and had no money coming in to pay my normal council tax bill..
Sorry if I'm confusing you with all this xx

            Re: Leanne: Jacobs bailiff

So they obtained a liability order for a debt of a tenner, I would be speaking to my local councillor asking them to find out why they went down a route that increased the debt by 25 times.

Yeah all started from just over £10 Im not sure if it went to court with council before it got past to Jacobs or not I don't really understand how it all works but I'm going to council tomorrow cause I've already paid £500 which shouldn't of even gone to that amount I ain't paying another £467.00 they should of known I wasn't getting any benifit at the time as it would of shown on system I'd put a new claim in surely xx

Just an update I've spoke to the council again she said she can't see anything on system that a second debt has been passed to Jacobs I've gotta ring recovery in morning to see why Jacob has been demanding more money. And not heard anything from the bailiffs yet today xx

                  Re: Leanne: Jacobs bailiff

Please post back after you have spoken with the council recovery department.

If it is the case that a Liability Order was gained for just £10 then the council really do need to look back at the action that they took (in referring this case to bailiffs) as the fees can be seen to be wholly disproportionate to the amount of debt.

Spoke to them they said it ended up been £80 something as it had been to court which I didn't know about and Jacobs apparently can put whatever charges they want on and I have to take it up with them so ended up at £500 from been £80 when passed to Jacobs ☹️ Still don't know where the 2nd enforcement has appeared from tho council tax said yesterday that there's nothing else on system showing a 2nd debt xx

Ah so they did get the LO for a debt of a tenner, the increase to £80 odd would be because they added a Court Fee to the debt for obtaining the Liability order for a tenner, which they then passed to Snacobs who added the £75 Compliance Fee, and the £235 Enforcement fee. I agree with Milo, totally disproportionate action by the council . You should contact your local Councillor, and apppraise them of the way the Revenues department have handled your case, if they do diddly in your case I would send a Formal Complaint to CEO and Elected Leader regarding their staff increasing a debt by 20 times what was originally owed.

                          Re: Leanne: Jacobs bailiff

Just received this email back from council tax as I emailed them last Friday.......

Please be advised that we will not normally become involved with Council Tax arrears, which have been sent out to an external Enforcement agent and who are acting on our behalf with a view to recovering those arrears. This is a matter solely between the Council Tax payer and the Enforcement Agent.

However, it is clear to me that your income is limited and that you may not be able to pay the amounts that Jacobs are requesting. Therefore, I have requested that this debt be returned from Jacobs on the grounds of vulnerability and the additional fees, which have been added, correctly, by Jacobs, have been requested to be cancelled.

So I guess this is good news I feel like a weight has been lifted anyway xx

Glad the council saw sense, if indeed the original debt they sought the Liability Order for was £10,76, they would have looked really bad if the press like the Sun, Mirror or Mail picked up on the fact it had increased to £499 or so solely on court and bailiff fees.s . Well done

Is the £10.99 paid? Apply for CT reduction and pay the amount you need to regularly and get a receipts.
