  • 'Acting up' for almost 3 years - am I entitled to remain in position?

    Hi
I have been in an acting up position (within the NHS) for coming up to 3 years - am I entitled to the position full time, or will I have to apply for it? (if it ever gets advertised!)

The complication is that there is a more experienced member of staff who has been on maternity leave twice during that time, and is due to return soon.

Contract of employment and staff hand book are your starting point.

I am not 100% sure but when it comes to the NHS you will probably have to apply for the position. Sorry. I wish I could give you better news but they will not hold things like maternity leave against the more ,if tenuously, experienced candidate. You may actually find that if the person on maternity leave officially holds the position then they will automatically assume the role when they return to work. If you feel you have done a good job and deserve that role then believe in yourself. Don’t be humble and ‘big it up ‘ on your application if you do get to apply. If not smother your CV in your recent responsibilities and apply for anything at a similar level.
It may be hard but grin and bear as you may be working for one of the most secure employers in the country no matter how rubbish you might feel at the moment. Hang on for a bit as the management teams change so frequently!

An optimist is someone who falls off the Empire State Building, and after 50 floors says, 'So far so good'!
