  • Getting fired for an accident

I drive a wheeled loading shovel at work and whilst reversing through a narrow gap I clipped a wall and knocked about 10-15 bricks off. The owner/managing director of the company wasn't happy obviously. I tried to explain what happened but he wouldn't let me get a word in edgeways and just stood bombarding me with questions he wouldn't give me chance to answer and the odd insult. At the end of all this he said "give me a good reason I should keep you on." Again before I could answer he stated "I think we both know what you need to find now." It was quite obvious he meant a new job. Can he fire me for the accident. There was no damage to the digger and the bricks are usable. I was doing everything properly and by the book. It was just a slight misjudgement. Considering I only had a couple of inch either side of me it could of been worse. I have never put a foot wrong since working here and do 70-90 hours a week to help out as the company are short staffed.
