  • Funeral Leave

I'm currently working as a lecturer at a 6th form College. My cousin died of cancer last week and his funeral have been arranged for 24th May but my request for leave has been refused on the grounds that the College can't get cover this close to the GCSE exams. I'm on a supply contract until 30th June which I have terminated early so my final day is 8th June. I've asked the College to reconsider. In the meantime I would like to know:

    - What legal rights do I have to attend a funeral?
    - If I phone in sick on the day could I be instantly dismissed?

    Best regards

    Re: Funeral Leave

Normally leave is granted only for NOK.
Phoning in sick would raise concerns as you have previously asked for that day off to attend the funeral.
