  • Dealer not giving V5C

Hi, I have been so stupid, I bought a used car on Friday 08.04.2016 from a dealer and picked it up on Wednesday, I asked the dealer how much tax was left on it he said 2 months but I didn't know the new law about having to buy new tax when buying a car (it was the first car bought in 4 years), anyway that's not my biggest problem, the problem is I never got the V5C green tear off portion from him so I can't tax the car, other dealers I've bought cars from over the years always dealt with the v5c so I didn't think about. I've been phoning him the past few days but he keeps giving me the run around telling lies saying it's here and there or it will be in the post soon, I know now that I shouldn't have bought it without the V5C doc, I really don't know what to do or who can help me, I phoned DVLA to see what the say and was told I have to fill in a V62 and pay £25 and wait upto 6 weeks for the new docs but that's all very well but my kids are back to school on Monday and I have no car. I'm now without a car as it has no tax, can I take the car back to the dealer for a refund? or is there something else I can do Please help.

    Kind Regards
    Dave

Have you done a HPI check to make sure it's not financed or anything? If you've lost your V5 you should be able to go to the post office pay the 25 quid and also pay for your tax at the same time. They will will in the bit about having no V5 with you and take some ID etc.
