• Santander current account - Remove default

Hi All,

There are loads of articles on this matter on this site and others. Here is a brief history:

2012: I opened an account with santander as they were offering £100 to switch. They initially said they would give me an overdraft of £1500 (matching my current bank account). I left and then got a call saying they couldn't do the OD so never switched, and completely forgot I had even opened this bank account.

2014: I signed up for free credit thingy and see A default amount on my account for £650, it transpires that this account had a minimum monthly deposit amount of £600 (I think). As I never used the account (and hadn't deposited the minimum amount) they fined me £3.00 for a few months. This took me into the chargeable OD limit and for 6 months they carged me £100.00.

Now I moved house in between opening the account and all of this, did not update them with my address and didn't know this was going on. After explaining my situation to many different departments at Santander, I got the debt wiped off.

But... My credit file is haunted by a year of missed payments and Defaults. Me and the Mrs found out recenlty that were expecting our 1st child so were trying to get a mortgage to put some roots down. I was thinking of sending a letter to the CEO of Santander, explaining what happened:
- I was never told their was a minimum deposit amount
- Its clear that I didn't go ovrdrawn as I was spending money
- I moved house so didn't receive any of the letters they sent out
- I was not given the OD that I had been told when I setup the account
- The fact this adverse credit history is causing harm to me and my family

And ask for them, as a gesture of goodwill, to remove the default and missed payment.

I was thinking of starting off nice ,and then go down the route of suggesting the account was mis-sold, charges were unfair?

Should I go to the CEO or try "normal" complains dept 1st. I prefer the former, as if I contact the comlaints department; I'll end up sending tons of letters.

If I draft a letter, could someone read it over and give me some suggestions on what I should change?

What are your thoughts on this? Am I wasting my time?

EDIT: Looks like I posted this in the wrong forum, I cant see how I change this, can one of the mods move this into the best forum?

So I emailed the CEO of Santander; got an email back from the "Executive Complaints Manager" reporting she will start looking into the complaint and get back "very soon". I'll update this thread when I hear back, in case anyone else is in a similar situation.

I know my chances are slim, but fingers crossed.

Does anyone have any idea of how long Santander take to get back re:complaints

Good evening welcome to LB.

I'm sorry your first post was missed,

I would have advised similar action to that you have already taken a complaint to the CEO.
If you have made a " formal" complaint it allows for 56 days to investigate and respond.
Satan's bank has a pretty poor record on paperwork and causing confusion.

No offer of compensation, TBH I was very happy to just have the adverse credit removed!

Another issue has arisen though. I had a call from a debt collector a few days ago regarding a British Gas bill from 4 years ago (I thought this was paid), I see BG have an entry on my credit file, but the account was closed soon after I moved out. The credit report shows 2 missd payments, but does not look too bad. I am concerned now that when I pay this off, they will update my credit file to show 4 years of missed payments or a default.

What a PITA, I just fixed my credit file ready to apply for Mortgage and now this has reered its head.
nemesis45 ; what do you think about this? Are they likely to update the CRA, given that they have not for over 4 years? If they were to add a default, would it be dated today or back in 2012? I don't seem to recall any letters coming though, so I may try and stall as much as possible to allow our Mortgage application to go through

The credit report should show a paid off account as " settled" or if defaulted and paid of as " satisfied" if this has not been done raise a formal complaint with the data controller at BG head office.
Do Not go through customer (dis) service clueless is all I can say about them.

Hi nathfoley,

I know this thread was over a year ago but how did you contact the CEO? Where do I find the address? I have a similar problem with them that I need to get resolved and this seems like a good way to do it judging by your experience

Thanks
