Any letter that does not state exactly what the subject matter is should be ignored, (stay off the phone/ don't answer any security questions!) no doubt unless you withhold your number is has been recorded on their files.
In England & Wales a debt which is statute barred still exists and is collectable by any means short of court action.

There is no " 6 year rule" as such the Limitation Act 1980 lay down a specific period (6 years) for debts arising from " simple" contracts, BUT the start of the relevant 6 years varies according to the type of debt.

Is there anything on your wifes' credit report?

I do agree with Nem about ignoring tho' ... unless they state exactly what 'debt' they're chasing (meaning you can query/refute it) they aren't really trying xx
Debt is like any other trap, easy enough to get into, but hard enough to get out of.
