Re: Contacted by Advantis - what to do?

    Thanks, all.
I'll start with a SAR to HMRC and a letter to Advantis stating that
    1. I have no knowledge of the alleged debt
    2. In order to clarify the situation I have now approached HMRC directly
    3. I will only correspond with them via post.
I'll also request a summary of pay and tax deducted from my employer.
My thanks to nem and flaming parrot and all who have offered advice. I'll let you know what happens.

Advantis are a debt collection and tracing company who look after accounts for people like HMRC ( tax credit overpayment, late filing penalties etc), DVLA, some water companies, DWP benefit overpayments etc.
If you receive a letter from them the first thing to do is to try and find out what the original 'debt' is. A good starting point is to contact HMRC and ask them if there is any tax issue you should be aware of.
If you receive a call from them you are under no obligation to speak to them or go through their data protection. Ask them to put anything in writing and end the call.

Any support I provide is offered without liability, if you are unsure please seek professional legal guidance.

Does anyone know where Advantis get their profit/costs from? Debt purchasers lu Cabot buy a debt at a discount the debt is asigned to the, this gives them authority to demand paymemt but what about Advantis?

They are paid by the creditors/govt dept/HMRC to manage their debt collection. Presumably some commission basis, but they act on behalf of another company/govt dept not for themselves.
