  • Disciplinary Help

Hi I hope I can get some advice. I have been stupid and done something stupid at work. There are mitigating circumstances and the amount involved equals £320. Technically this amounts to theft, I have admitted what I have done and put my reasons across, and offered to pay the money back. Obviously I am going through the process and have been suspended. If I leave they have said it will show I left whilst under investigation. Is this going to prevent me getting a job full stop?? I work in finance if that helps? Please help

Hard to say - What exactly did you do?

Though finance sector are very strict and a future employer will ask you why you were under investigation. The reference your current employ will likely only say resigned pending investigation but not what you were investigated for!

thanks for answering. Basically I made a false ATM claim. They seem to think I may get a final written warning. Obviously I need to have something lined up if it looks unlikely to be that. Like I said there are mitigating circumstances and my record is clear the previous 8 years. Just need to know if better to walk or stay.

Its very difficult to say to be honest, as you know what you did was wrong and you benefited by £320, though given the small amount compared to other fraudulent actions of people in the finance industry and depending on what your mitigating circumstances were along with the chance of this destroying you future career in the finance sector, then they may will just give you a final warning, but then its just as likely they may dismiss you. If you were dismissed your reference would likely simply state "dismissed for gross misconduct" - which would not be as damaging to your chances of getting a new job in the finance sector, as then you can say when asked why you were dismissed that you were dismissed for something less serious, but would still amount to gross misconduct - I.e. you were accused of being drunk by a colleague, because they smelt alcohol on your breath, when in fact, you had been drinking the night before to celebrate something and didn't get home to the early hours, so you were actually just hung over, but not drunk!

In terms of being future employers will they employ someone when it says left whilst under investigation? I have been honest with recruitment agencies and have a couple of interviews lined up. I just wondered how they will view this.

They will probably want to know what you were being investigated for, but its up to you what you tell them. Though there's the chance they will ring your previous employer and ask them directly, but whether they say or not is a different matter. So it be hit and miss am afraid.
