  • How to convince my boss to let me leave

I am working in an audit firm, although there's no contract in place but I did enter into a verbal understanding that if I leave this internship before one and half years, I'll not be given any experience letter. Now my back has started to give me problems as of late and I'm finding it troublesome to sit for copious amounts of time. I'm being paid less than the minimum wage, being forced to work for around 12-15 hours a day without any overtime payments, hectic workload i.e work that should be done by 3 people. These problems have made my back pain worse and worse. I can get all the medical certificates and x rays from my doctor which depict the deteriorating condition of my back. But the problem is that my boss is not letting me go he is threatening to report me to my professional body if I leave even though there's no contract that restricts me to stay for full 1.5 years ?

I know it's a UK forum But I'm from Pakistan, where there are no rights to protect humans, let alone employees. Although my professional body is UK body.

I want to know what if any disciplinary actions can my professional body take any action against me, since the contract is between just me and the employer and not the professional body. And I have ample reasons to leave such as medical problems, working conditions etc.

What to do in this situation?

P.S Multiple persons have left this firm this way and employer has never done anything to them.

      Hi and welcome.
Whilst I can't really advise you, I just wonder what sort of disciplinary action your professional body could bring, other than cancellation of membership.
On the other hand is there any contest between your job and your health?
You admit to being underpaid and overworked and in poor health, but remain with your slave driver?

Yes, I admit to being underpaid and all that. But the problem is that here in Pakistan, you can't do a damn thing about it. I'm just wondering whether the professional body will take such drastic action against me, since I have ample reasons to leave.

Not in their interest so can't see why they should, especially in view of the circumstances.

whose the professional body - don't worry bout your employer seeing this as i doubt hes even heard of this forum.

Maybe you should contact the proffessional body yourself and see if they can advise you, plus doubt they'd be happy with your employer who i assume is also a member of the same professional body, if they feel hes abusing his interns by being so unprofessional to not even have a written contract between himself and his interns/employees or not paying the national minimum wage to interns (if theirs an applicable age law in Pakistan, or if its a requirement to do so to be a member of said professional body)!

The question you may need to ask yourself is

Is sitting in your job suffering in pain, and making it worse on very low wages worth more than a Experience letter ?

                    I know what I would do ?

I'm not concerned about the experience letter, I'm concerned about whether the professional body will/can remove me from register for this if I leave, as the manager is threatening me about it. He explained that the partner of the firm has contacts in that professional body, and he can get me removed if I leave now

Thanks, I've gone through it and almost all of the clauses are being violated, it's the norm here, but the issue is that we can't do a damn thing about it here in Pakistan. I'll have to leave, I have no other options. But I'm only worried about the possible disciplinary action by professional body. I am in utter despair right now.

If you need this leave and you can leave by taking medical leave then you must take it. Every firm or company have to follow the employment law. If still they do not agree on giving you leave. Then you have full legal option to apply.
