  • Equal pay for female colleagues?

    I am a female employee in a 'unique' data protection role within a large organisation. Now they are expanding the team and another female employee from another part of the firm will be joining me in my role next week. We will do the same work and have no differentiation in position/hierarchy/experience (she has the same skills/qualification as I) at all. However I know her current pay banding and that she is in a 'more lucrative' job but is transferring to this role for a change of scenery. I am worried and almost certain that they will retain her currenty salary and she will be paid double my wage for exactly the same job. Can the company actually do this? (No gender/race/religious discrimination issues)

    Hello and welcome to LB.
    The answer to your query is "yes, they can".
    Since you were happy with your terms and conditions and accepted your contract of employment, nothing has changed.
    Somebody else "may" be on different terms to you, but that doesn't change your situation.

      On a separate note to what Sean has stated (which is correct if by the way). If she is to be in the same role as yourself for a considerable period of time 6 months plus or on a permanent full time basis. Then you could write to your employer requesting a pay review and outlining your concerns as to the significant difference in Pay between what your currently on and what the other employee is on, whilist making clear that both your roles are the same.

      However do not do so for the first 2-3 months as the situation sounds a bit unusual to me, as it's unusual for an employee to be moved to another role willy nilly, just because they (employee) wanted a change of scenery. Especially to a role that has a much lower pay grade/rate.

      What was her previous role in the company?
      How long has she worked at the company?
      And how long have you worked there (duration of employment can effect your rate of pay too)?
