I don't know if it's been mentioned before but the Passport Office themselves have put it all online. Friend has just renewed her passport. Fill in the form on line, the site checks it, if correct you pay your money and print the form. SIgn the form and send with photographs (if required) to the passport office. Quite impressed with it. And it cam up first on the google search! Someone in charge must be taking notice.

After writing the above came across another site britishpassportsuk . co . uk that is offering to renew passports with no message that it is not the Passport Office. ASA again?

Yep its owned by an lone individual is the domain - http://www.nominet.org.uk/whois/lookup?query=britishpassportsuk.co.uk


Also claims that nearly all fortune 100 companies trust their services - Obviously a lie is that!

Excellent. Let us know how long the passport actually takes.

The thirdparty/copycat sites seem to rely on people searching on more long tail terms or mistypes and contain the relevant content in the result listing - whereas the gov sites don't.

We're not ever going to beat the third party sites just have to continue getting the message out there to use gov.uk

Regulation of govt services add on services is needed but bloody complex.

From the appearance of the government site as first in the Google list it would seem that Google had tried hard to force it to the top. Not the normal format. Perhaps the pressure lately has forced this.

Advertised as a 3 week turnaround for a straight replacement. We shall see.
