In May 2010, Sally Donaldson logged on and arranged for her £1,000-a-month pay to […]

Whatever happened to the word honesty? Laura should be hauled through the courts for stealing the money.

I do agree ... the whole system needs an overhaul. But I cannot understand how someone doesn't realise that the money is going somewhere it shouldn't :tinysmile_aha_t:
Surely £1000 a month not being there should be noticeable?

As for Laura, if she did tell the bank back in 2010
It also emerged this week that Laura claims she went into a Nationwide branch back in 2010 to report that money had started appearing in her account. Internal Nationwide emails reveal she claims a member of staff told her the payments “were for her” – but the society says it was only after it wrote to Laura to ask her to repay the money that she mentioned this. “We investigated this claim at the time she made it [in 2012], and could not find any evidence of her having alerted us. If she had, it would have triggered a process that would return the payment to the sending bank,” the society told us.
and the bank are now denying this, then I feel the bank should have looked more closely at it back then

Thank you Kati, and I'll apologise to Laura (who benefitted from the monies) as I didn't see that part when I read it - shows we can be too quick to jump to conclusions as well.

If what you have cited is true, then I feel the bank should not demand anything back; the two opposites from me - her fault, haul her over the coals, bank's fault pay nothing back.

Although, saying that ... if Laura knew the money wasn't hers, she could have probably done more about it :tinysmile_hmm_t2:
I know that i would question EVERY questionable bank transfer (both in or out)

and I still cannot understand the other woman not missing £1000 a month (unless she thought she was depositing it in a savings account - but even then she should have checked it periodically)

What have you got to apologise about She STOLE the money all £26,000 of it and by admitting she contacted the bank and despite what she claims the bank told her (it was hers) she knew it wasn't yet continued to steal it. What more needs to be said other than the woman's a thief plain and simple and it needs to be said that you feeling sorry for her makes you the mug
