  • Scottish Power: Warrant of entry addresed to ''occupier' - not my debt

    Hi,

I have just gotten off the phone from Scottish Power who refused to log that I had called them.

They put a hand delivered note through my door today addressed to the occupier. In it it named somebody else's debt and demanded I call them or a warrant of entry would be sought.

I called them to inform them it was not my debt and I had never used them. They were polite enough at first as I attempted to find out from the meter number who it belonged to. The meter number did not match my meter, or anyone else immediately nearby.

At the point when I requested they logged I had called them and that it was not my debt, they became very aggressive. They accused me of being the debtor - that I would not be concerned unless I was him, asking me to repeat my name when I responded that I was not him but gave my name. They refused to log anything or to allow me to escalate it to a manager. They stated they could not note I had called them as this would be a breach of the Data Protection Act (I do not believe this means they can't take information from me, I also believe that their providing me the name and amount of someone else's debt is a breach). They repeatedly asked me if I knew the debtor, and where he could be found, which I do not. From the information they provided I was however able to find his address using a quick google search.

They started stating they would continue to pursue the debt with 'the occupier' as it could not be harrasment as the letter was not addressed to me, just the 'occupier'. I attempted to explain I was the occupier repeatedly, but this was responded with because of Data Protection they could not note this, and a manager could not speak to me because of Data Protection.

They seem intent on gaining a warrant against me, as occupier, for someone else's meter, and someone else's debt.

How can I make this stop?

I've found a copy of their COMPLAINTS PROCEDURE that might be worth having a read through too :tinysmile_twink_t2:

      Thank you Kati,

I have just emailed them but given that is the number I called they seem to not follow 'What you can expect from us' and certainly 'And if you contact us by telephone, we will liaise with a Team Manager if necessary, to get you a satisfactory outcome. ' was met with a flat refusal. The suggestion being you can only complain if you are a customer of theres.

If they continue to 'drag their heels' over it, you could always get your local MP involved (most utility companies I've had dealings with seem to do more to rectify their mistakes when there's someone 'official' on your side :lol

I am curious as to how all this panned out?

The SP contact's behaviour sounds awfully like an experience I had a few years ago, where I was harangued and loudly questioned about my intention to cancel an energy tariff I had entered into. SP's customer service is as appalling as their billing system is!

How was the OP's issue resolved?

Currently in dispute with Scottish Power after they sent some thug around to the home of a vulnerable adult with threats of violence and damage to his property! They are without shame!
