    This is quite an interesting case because the parents are Polish and the judge at an early stage appears to rule out the possibility of placement with the grandparents of the child because they live in Poland. This is a contentious issue in Europe and there have been cases going through the courts over the issue of "forced adoption". We are one of very few European countries that have this barbaric process of cutting completely familial ties forever.

    As we welcome more people from the EU, it will be important in child protection cases that the extended family are considered for guardianship of the child especially as it may lead to further appeals and diplomatic issues over the treatment of EU nationals in this country.
