If you have experienced any technical difficulties that have prevented you from doing your returns then you should definitely bring it up.

It's always wise to keep a copy of everything you send and receive. Ideally you should have a folder dedicated specifically to correspondence to and from HMRC.

It's also a good idea to send your letters recorded delivery so you can track that they've actually been received and when.

I haven't exagurated on anything and put honest amounts. is there certain things that they will say I don't need to pay??? I have a payday loan that I pay 350 a month for I know its bad but didn't have a choice at the time, but that finishs in November I am happy to then pay that amount to hmrc ive been used to not having it so would rather it go to them..... starting to get myself wound up again cant sleep constant headache feeling like poo

The way it worked with me a few years ago was...if you owe no tax then you dont have to pay the fines...maybe its changed or i was just lucky....but first things first,do the returns to prove you owe nothing....and please never agree to pay the unreasonable fine they have given you, that was no doubt calculated thinking your still working and just ignoring the tax man...Fight them and be sure they know what hardship they will cause ect...this is not unpaid tax, this is admin charges and unreasonable to.Goodluck, and please do not start paying it until you know you absoluntly have to.

thank you for the advice, could you please help me with a letter to go with my i.e form, don't know where to start, I,m almost positive when I do my returns I wont owe any tax as I was on income support for 6 months, how can I fight them? surely I have to pay it if they say I owe it.
