  • The Money Club

Had these rang me some time ago. They claim to negotiate bulk discounts on various items and holidays in return of an annual membership fee. The trial is supposed to start at just Ł1.

I think they got my number from maximiles or a similar survey website.

Anyway, a well-spoken bloke rang me, explaining the 'benefits' of their membership. In principle I was prepared to give it a go but once he asked for my bank details my instincts decided otherwise. I asked him kindly to post me the forms including terms and conditions and direct debit form. He insisted he needed my bank details there and then at which point I simply hang up.

I have done a bit of a research to this organisation. The appear to be a day light robbery site. People often think they signed up for a Ł1 trial period, yet Ł89 soon gets taken from your bank account. The trial lasts for 28 days but many people do not receive their 'welcome' back within that period. They blame Royal Mail but in all honesty I think they simply delay the posting!

I think one of the legal professionals linked to LB should look into this as this scam needs to be stopped!

So they instigate by a cold call, and direct you to their website? Or just do the whole thing over the phone ? Do other people who havent been cold called just find their website - would that class it as an online 'scam' (if it were a scam) ?

      It's done over the phone.

However, they appear to get their prospective 'clients' contact numbers from maximiles and some other survey sites.

Maximiles itself is not a scam. In fact, I've got some decent wine through them delivered, all free of charge, for little effort for my points. Still, the way they handle data could be better.

There's quite a lot about The Money Club on MSE.
