Over 5,000 signatures but still no response

    Aug 28, 2014
28 ago 2014 — Families, campaigners and parliamentarians have been keeping the pressure on following the missed deadline on 1st June for getting people out of assessment and treatment units like Winterbourne View:

    • On 2 July there was a meeting of the All Party Parliamentary Group on Learning Disability where families again told their stories to the Care Minister, Norman Lamb, senior representatives from NHS England and parliamentarians.

    • On 8 July Tom Clarke MP led a debate where MPs raised their concerns on the government, NHS and local authorities’ failure to meet the June deadline. The Minister said that NHS England expects 35% of the 2,615 people currently in such institutions to be transferred out within the next year. That same day the Labour party also came out and called for a 2 year deadline for getting everyone moved out of assessment and treatment units.

But shockingly, the latest lot of figures from NHS England show more people are still going into units than are coming out: http://www.theguardian.com/society/2...-transfer-plan.

    • On 15 July, a number of MPs asked questions on Winterbourne View to the Secretary of State for Health and the ministerial team. Norman Lamb said NHS England are producing an action plan which would be ready by the end of August and there would be clear expectations for improvements in how many people are being transferred out of units. We will be watching closely.

    • In the last few weeks we have heard there will be an Inquiry by the National Audit Office, asking the question: have services for people with a learning disability improved since the Winterbourne View scandal? This will include looking into what has been done to meet Government commitments and deadlines.

This is an incredible win for families and campaigners and we hugely welcome it. We know at the moment the answer to the Inquiry’s question is definitely no. But with the Inquiry reporting in early 2015 we hope this helps drive the change urgently needed. http://www.mencap.org.uk/news/articl...ost-winterbour.

But, we are still waiting for a response from David Cameron to the families who wrote to him in June and to the 5,000 of you who have signed this petition calling on him to take responsibility and to take action. We want to know what the new deadline is and whether the Prime Minister will provide the leadership needed to make change happen. We have been assured we will have a response soon.

At the moment we still only have promises, when what we need is real action.

Critically families must be at the heart of all work moving forward and their voices listened to within the new groups and forums.

With your help, we will continue to work to keep Winterbourne View a high priority; thank you.

          Update:

It has been 3 and a half years since Winterbourne View, and in that time there have been countless meetings, many reports and strategies, but as the numbers show, nothing has actually improved and families are still fighting to get their loved ones back into their local communities where they belong.
