      What do you all think?????????
I have just put a complaint forward for my father to Natwest. He has banked with them since the 80s (free account) and on a regular visit to the bank in 1998 with my mother he was advised that he 'qualified for this account' and the free account he had was no longer availible. My father been 62 at the time - trusted the clerks advice and took out the account.
It came to our attention when recently he discovered that I have a free account and he couldn't believe there is free accounts out there on the high street as he was under the impression they don't exist.
He retired two years after taking the PBA out in the year 2000.
      Never used any benefits
Doesn't travel( to old to use travel insurance anyway as he is now 80)
Never drove- therefor no need for breakdown
Has a very cheap old phone - only used incase of emergencies.
Theatre tickets reduced- never been to the theatre!
They asked the questions when making the complaint - why did he not act on correspondence they have sent over the years - advised my father does not do online or telephone banking- he only deals direct in branch face to face and has had numerous reviews in branch over the years and no one had ever checked eligibility of benefits.

I have spoke to natwest and they said they will send a letter with there decision in the next 2 weeks? What is everyone's opinion on this?
      Thanks x

I worked for NatWest way back in 1998(i was in the early stages of my career), albeit in a call centre that they were in the process of transferring to what they do today, the large centralised call centres. Anyway, I have worked in branches and what you have said above is a classic case of misselling. Firstly, that was a sales technique: he "qualified" for an account(it's a nice phrase really cos it suggests that there are people that cannot have this).
He might have had a current account(they did current plus and the accounts with benefits). They might have started the process of changing current account to current plus(what they means in reality is that the interest rate was 0.1% as opposed to simply 0%).
However, if he has never driven then the roadside recovery is useless.
If he used the overdraft then there is a benefit potentially.
Any loans or mortgages?(I didn't think so either ).
The phone insurance came only much later with the package.
I do remember the old benefits that came with entertainment(never used them either).

It would be interesting to see what NatWest say because based solely on the benefits and we are talking over the last 17 years(not sure travel insurance came in til early 2000's btw but I could be wrong).

Personally, based simply on his needs and the type of account then providing he NEVER used the overdraft then the benefit might be extremely low as interest might have been 0.2% as opposed to 0.1% for credit interest.

My gut feeling says that they will be making an offer but please post up what they say

btw: I don't work for NatWest any longer(that career came to an end in 2009).

That is another point I forgot to mention - he has a 8000 overdraft with the account but has NEVER used it.
Will keep you updated with how the complaint goes.

They key thing is in bold. If he didn't use the overdraft then he did not have the benefit of the overdraft

Re: Reclaim Mis-sold NatWest Advantage Gold Package Accounts – Successful Case Study

Hi, although I did not bank with Nat West, I wrote a letter last Thursday to Lloyds bank complaining about a possibly miss sold gold account which I later upgraded to a platinum account. I made several claims on the mobile phone insurance and used the AA 3 times. I didn't expect anything, however, on Monday a complaints manager phoned me to discuss my claim, and on Tuesday he phoned back with his decision. He felt I used the facilities but I could have had the same with a cheaper account and today the refund was in my nat west account as I no longer bank with Lloyds!!!

Complaint settled and money in the bank in 6 days after sending a letter of complaint, but still cant bring myself to give them praise!!!!

Just thought Id let you guys know, have never know Lloyds be so quick with anything. I know this isn't truly post related but if anybody reads this, its always worth a try as you have nothing to lose

I'm not sure if this will help at all - http://www.telegraph.co.uk/finance/p...expensive.html (from 2005)
Meanwhile NatWest's Advantage Gold account charges £9 a month and claims to offer free travel insurance "worth £91". This comes with a big catch though - you have to pay for the holiday with a NatWest credit card to qualify.

"The fees on premium accounts can be well over £100 a year, yet you can buy an annual multi-trip travel insurance policy for £65 online," says Matt Ball, the editor of MSN Money. "Unless the other benefits offered with the premium account will be of real value to you, then you'll be better off having a basic current account and buying a travel insurance policy separately."

                    NatWest Advantage Gold

Extras: The account provides worldwide annual family travel insurance, mobile phone insurance for up to two phones, identity theft cover and accidental death benefit. There is also £100 off a £500 holiday and commission-free travel money.

How much? This account charges £12 a month and claims to save customers as much as £621 a year.

In credit or overdrawn? The account pays 0·28 per cent interest to customers in credit, while those who go overdrawn will be charged a tiered rate depending on the amount involved. Up to £1,000 will cost 15·59 per cent; more than £5,000, 13·99 per cent. Unauthorised overdrafts are charged at a sky-high 29·69 per cent.

White says: "Most travel agents and banks offer commission-free travel money, so this is not a saving. As with all the other accounts, the overdraft costs are still pretty high. As for identity theft cover, most people are better off taking preventative measures such as buying a shredder. There’s just no point in paying extra for this kind of cover. You are paying more than £130 a year for things that can be bought more cheaply elsewhere."

                        Hi
If you claim back advantage gold fees (and are successful?) do you end up being penalised by the bank at all? Presumably you change account (to one without fees) but do you end up having to move to another bank? Thanks

Hi, so I'm pretty late to the party here but just wanted to seek some advice about my AG account that was sold to me back when I worked for NatWest from 1996-2005. As I recall, I was told I HAD to open this account when I became an employee of NatWest & when they were first introduced. I dont recall using any of the 'benefits' for quite some time but did use the overdraft that it provided. Would have to check this though. However, as I say, this was opened because I was an employee at the time. I have in 2009 or 10 registered a phone & made a claim for loss but never used the other facilities the account offered.
What is the likelihood of me getting a refund for being made to open it in the first place?
Any help would be appreciated 😊

It cost you £0.00 until 2005. So your claim is from 2005. I have severe doubts about your claim because you worked for the bank for over 10 years and cannot claim you did not understand the product at all. It's a punt in the dark in my opinion....

                              Hi
I've come upon this forum after receiving my "refusal" from NatWest after trying to reclaim on Advantage Gold. I'm really really annoyed. I find the letter to be really patronising and not sure how correct it is, basically I've left it too late to complain (account between 1999 -2007) and I really should have noticed additional charges / unused benefits & questioned it then!!! Which seems laughable considering the same time limits are ignored for PPI claims. Ombudsman may not help either due to the time frame. I only claimed as I have recently used a company for PPI for a company now gone bust & wasn't sure how to chase them. The firm I was using asked about these kind of package accounts & I mentioned the advantage gold I had on my recent joint account not thinking I could get anywhere. Well we got a refund off that one for 3 months worth. NatWest then sent me a letter informing me that I used to have this other account and did I wish to contact them regarding it so I did!!! I got a phone call yesterday to go through the claim and then the refusal letter lands this morning. I guess she was typing my refusal as I spoke!!! To add insult to injury, at the bottom of the letter it asks whether I would be interested in such & such that for £2 per month gives me money back on utility bills!!!!! Bloody cheek.
Just currently trying to decide whether to bother with the ombudsman or just close my account, my joint account & the 3 childrens' accounts 😡
