Sorry but as far as I am aware the only potential option you would have is to take legal action against the person who sold you the car which may or may not be worthwhile. In all probability it isn't worthwhile because you are probably very unlikely to actually see any money, regardless of what the court orders.

In reality, I think you're probably just going to have to accept that you've lost your money.

The only possible exception might be if you carried out an HPI check which came back clear. Did you do such a check before purchasing?

You bought what is known as a "ringer". The car will have been stolen and then whoever was responsible for stealing the car changed the VIN in order to conceal its true identity. Did the police take a Witness Statement from you? Also, did they ask you to make a Statement of Complaint? The reason I ask you this is because you are, like it or not, a victim of a crime, namely, Fraud by False Misrepresentation.

It is likely the car was stolen by a gang. This sort of crime is normally attributable to organised gangs. Don't be surprised if the Stolen Vehicle Squad of your local police force contact you or the Serious and Organised Crime Agency (SOCA) get in touch. Incidentally, which police force is involved?

As to ownership, the lawful owner of the vehicle will be either the person from whom it was stolen or an insurance company. I'm afraid that unless you can trace the seller, save the police catching the person from whom you bought the car, there is very little you can do. As for the unhelpfulness of the police, you could make a formal complaint to the Chief Constable, but don't hold you breath.

Hi there, first thing that you have to consider when buying a car, specially if it is a used car is the papers. It is clean and all documents are good so that you will not have a problem. I think you have to contact a lawyer if there is anything that he can help you to get a compensation of the loss. If you will buy another car, make sure that you will purchase directly from car company so you will not have the same problem again.
