  • Confused about a Will

My father died recently and left a will appointing his wife (my mother) as the sole executrix and making her the sole beneficiary. If he had not made a will she would have inherited everything as his next of kin.

In these circumstances, does she need to obtain a grant of probate, or does everything go to her automatically as next of kin?

I would be grateful for any comments people on this forum may have. Perhaps some of you have even dealt with a similar will.

Yes you need to obtain grant of probate. Download and complete a Form IHT205 and send it to the probate registry at their Holborn address. Read leaflet IHT206 guidance notes.

        Thanks for these replies.

We will try to obtain the grant ourselves, without using a solicitor, and see what happens.
