  • Debt collection agency took money from our bank without permission!

    Hi,

Could really do with some urgent advice please

I am absolutely fuming!! High Street Collections Ltd have been chasing us for a business debt on transport. We have been paying £100 here and there by debit card before Christmas. We have ignored their calls since Christmas as we are trying to get back on our knees.

Logged into our bank account this morning and see the cheeky so and so's have taken £100!!!

Are they allowed to do this? We have never set up any formal arrangement for payment, just adhoc over the phone.

    Advice very much appreciated. :beagle:

      Hi,

It was our Visa debit card.

Chargeback on the Visa Debit card then

Thanks. What is a chargeback and how do I do it?

Speak to the bank and explain that they have taken money out of your account without your permission and that you want he bank to start a chargeback to get the funds back. There is no reason why the bank would not start the process of doing this.

Thank you soooo much for your advice

Is it illegal for them to do this? I really want to have a rant at them!

They may not say it is but I would say they have no right to do so.

EDIT: I would cancel your card immediately and ask for a replacement as well.

Thanks so much for all your help - once again

The bank said because it was a POS transaction it would have to be passed to Fraud Dept Promptly went on the phone to the debt collectors, tried to fight their corner but know they have no chance, will chase them again tomorrow or report it.

card was cancelled, right? new one in the post. The bank might argue that you gave the company your card details and that is why they took the money. You have to be firm and state that you gave your consent to certain transactions but the current one was never authorised by yourself either verbally or otherwise. No repetitive payment was set either.
