      YB Penalties

If you read the 1st paragraph of this section NAB are clearly referring to income from penalty fees.

In the light of this admission can anyone think of an immediate way forward for YB/Clydesdale victims so they don't have to wait for the outcome of the High Court Case

I would question how you would get any ideas or offers of help if this were moved out of the open forum or are non-team members not worthy of offering advice?

            Theo

The point of the comment is that we know that YB AQU staff have admitted to monitoring forums to see what claimants are planning.

This info is potentially very valuable and may serve as a strong item against any defence they may state. One way forward is to publicise the info generally so that it is available to all claimants everywhere, though this would necessarily inform the bank of plans. An alternative is to see what their defences will be in light of the recent announcment and use this accordingly.

My concern was not to restrict access for comment, but rather to avoid a risk of the bank being forewarned of a counter to their possible defence. This was not meant in any way as a slight - sorry if it was taken that way.

            K.

              Kafka,

Maybe a possible way around this would be to place an announcement or closed sticky asking users to pm with their ideas? I am merely concerned that useful input could be lost if the subject were confined merely to the team.

And no apology required from you.

NAB to eradicate fees on some accounts

                        September 04, 2007

NATIONAL Australia Bank will cut a range of penalty fees and introduce new accounts that are potentially free of monthly service fees.
The decision follows an announcement from rival ANZ Banking Group last week that it will cut “exception fees” on credit cards for low-income users.

The move by the two banks follows growing disenchantment among customers over “hidden” bank fees, and a consumer campaign over the penalty charges.

Banks impose exception fees on withdrawals that exceed the level of funds in an account or when the bank is unable to make a payment on an account due to a lack of cleared funds.

The chief executive of NAB's Australian operations, Ahmed Fahour, said the cuts announced today were a result of the bank listening to its customers.

“These announcements about the reduction in exception fees is not the end,” he said.

“To use a Churchill saying ‘it's the start of the end'. In 2008 you will be seeing further announcements around us reducing fees and moving more for a fee-for-service model, and in particular us continuing to attack this area of exception fees,” he said.

Mr Fahour acknowledged the fee cuts would affect the bank's revenue but the losses would be offset by the new business attracted.

“Lower fees and, in some case, no fees will mean that we will make less of those types of fees than we did in the past,” the NAB boss said.

“I don't think that's necessarily a bad thing because those fees were not the best way to earn your revenue as an organisation.”

Mr Fahour said the new services would be “attractive” to NAB shareholders and customers “in the medium term”.

NAB's fee cuts won praise from consumer lobby groups as well as World Vision Australia chief executive Tim Costello, who also chairs the bank's community advisory panel.

“It puts low-cost banking within reach of a great number of Australians and continues the leadership we see in NAB's concession card account for low-income earners,” Rev Costello said.

From November, NAB will remove the $25 over-limit exemption fee it charges on its credit cards used by customers with a NAB concession card account.

The bank will remove the ability to overdraw the card on electronic purchases.

Next month the bank will introduce four new accounts that carry no monthly service fee with monthly deposits of $2,500 or more.

Among the four new products, the NAB Clear Banking account will carry no exception charges and will waive a $6 monthly service fee for monthly deposits of $3,500 or more.

More than half of “average” Australian households - if they decided to bank their salaries with NAB, for example - would qualify for the new account, Mr Fahour said.

NAB said that from early 2008 it would lower dishonour fees to $30, from $50, cut the periodical non-payment fee to $30 from $35, and eliminates the inward dishonour fee of $12 for credit cards.

Consumer magazine and lobby group CHOICE and the Consumer Action Law Centre said NAB's announcement showed it had responded to consumer sentiment.

“Now that two of the major banks have recognised that unfair fees need to go, Westpac, St George, the Commonwealth Bank and other institutions need to follow suit,” CHOICE policy and campaigns manager Gordon Renouf said.

Last week ANZ announced it would cut the exception fees for over-limit withdrawals on its credit cards for low-income earners from $35 to $10.

The ANZ will also waive the first exception fee customers incurred if customers contact the bank to discuss the problem, and will not charge more than one credit card over-limit fee in any one monthly statement cycle.

NAB shares closed 28 cents up at $40.20.
