  • Barclays refused help

I had mortgage interest support unlawfully withdrawn which put me in severe financial difficulty. I contacted barclays to change my 10 year fixed mortgage to another package and explained why. They flatly refused any help despite being on a high pre credit crunch interest rate. I could pay a very much lower rate now but was refused. I asked each year with the same response. I complained but was lied to. The ombudsmen said barclays provided no evidence against themselves. I provided the evidence but that didn't count as barclays lied about calls and had "none traceable now". Their lies were contradictory and the matter was closed. I complained again, and sent proof of their lies and barclays said they would reopen the case but just ignored it. They have not only refused to help but increased my debt by thousands of pounds in unused associated current account charges after telling them I couldn't pay and made it impossible for me to pay off any of the capital by keeping at 6.08% interest. They offered me £150 (forget exactly) for inconvenience which I rejected and told them they had missed the entire point of the request for help and insulting unfair treatment of me. Nevertheless, despite my objection and refusal of inconvenience compensation they put £75 into my current account which I have not touched. Can anyone advise please. My interest only mortgage, taken out with will woolwich and taken over by barclays is almost due for redemption. I asked them for policy fair treatment and they said there wasn't one. Livelylily.

One quick thing about your interest only mortgage expiry date, the FCA guidance says that lenders must consider a two year extension (I'll post a link to the source tomorrow).

Here is the link to the FCA Guidance on Interest Only Mortgages in August 2013. The whole emphasis is on treating customers fairly. Take a look at 3.5(f) in particular.

            Link > https://www.fca.org.uk/publication/f...ce/fg13-07.pdf

Barclays website does suggest that you can switch to a better mortgage deal but that is presumably dependant on their current lending criteria (your financial status) and the Product Fees do seem to be high > https://www.barclays.co.uk/mortgages...ntre/mortgage/

How did you take out this Woolwich mortgage in the first place and was there any PPI or Life Insurance connected to it?

Have you sent a Subject Access Request to Barclays to get the full history of the account since its inception? Perhaps you did that for the FOS complaint.

So why did this happen and did you challenge it?

Your mortgage - how much is it for, how much equity is there, how old are you, are you in work?

Same as us really, applied to Lloyds, took paperwork in etc, then got turned down. Got asked to look at CF with experian, so my wife and I sent off for it. mine is clear, one is closed and partially settled on Noddle but not shown on experian. Wife has one DF with Arrow Global so lookigninto this one. We could save £300 a month! and get the term reduced by about 3 or 4 years at least for the same. Mortgage is with oakwood home loans and interest is horrific. now owe about 80k..but we are making inroads on it, since 2006.

Tank you for the reply. The DWP used wrong legislation to stop paying mortgage interest support. I didn't know enough law at the time so I had no way of stopping them. Now I know the legislation they will not review it. Most for 67k plus 18k overdraft on linked current account, most of which is piled up interest on an unused account.

Tank you Di. The links are much appreciated. I will have another go at the ombudsmen, I have heard they are not as much bankers gangsters now for some reason. I am pretty desperate. The whole situation should never have happened.

                      Re: Barclays refused help

My whole case from the DWP unlawful withdrawal of legitimate support for mortgage interest is a Pandora's box of complications. I turned to barclays for help urgently because I took out a 10 year fixed mortgage to know what outgoings would be. The credit crunch hit and I was left with high interest rate and no housing support. Barclays flatly refused to help or change the package. I have contacted barclays almost each year with the same refusal. They just do not care and have lied about the situation. I shall request SAR from them this week.

Sorry I am not sure how to use this forum but hope I post the replies to the right people. Di, I was Court ordered to buy out my ex and remortgagedd to do this. I was in receipt of IS and there was no problem. IS paid mortgage interest support. Pension service did the same with no problems for two years when they said it was a mistake based on legislation not applicable to me. The Woolwich was taken over by Barclays. I don't know if there was PPI. Thank you.
