  • pseudonyms and copyright

Ok, so this is my quandary and I have tried googling it..... my brain still hurts!!

If someone could explain the answer to my question, in English and remembering that I am a lil divvy when it comes to this sorta thing, I would be eternally grateful.

    My quandary:

I write, a lot. So far I have written for children, but am branching out in to adult stuff too. Obviously, I don't want my little readers to be accessing my adult stuff accidentally so am wondering about adopting a pseudonym. Something totally unrelated to my real name.

My question is, where do I stand legally in tying in any profits from my adult literature to my profits from my children's books? How do I organise the copyright if the book isn't in my name? I publish under indie publishing so any monies would all go in to the same bank account and Paypal offer a service where they can work out your account for tax purposes.. but would a pseudonym bugger this up?

any ideas cos I am just confusing myself!

    Thanks

    Callie.

I would do a couple of things. First don't panic it happens a lot. Many writers of romantic fiction for Mills and Boon do it. Speak to an adult literature publisher ask them what the procedure is. Speak to hmrc for their take on the matter. One thing I would do however is open a separate account tof take your payments for the adult work . So it would be really name trading as pen name this means payment made in your pension nAmerican won't necessaryou reveal your real name.

      ok thanks

I must admit indie publishing is awkward as you are basically publishing yourself.

Will take you up on your advice, thanks so much

Ok, so now you need a name.

        Vi Aggra?
        Eliza Lott?
        Iris Eyes?

I like Iris Eyez to be honest!!

I do have a couple in mind, close personal friends will know who it is by the names, but no one else will understand it

Hubby suggested Isobel Ringing and Rose Bush but I don't reckon them.. wonder why.

I was thinking either Callie Flynn or Kit Murphy (as I say, close friends will understand the signifiance) but right now the whole thing is up in the air as to what I am gonna do

Can I just ask SC ... How 'adult' is adult stuff?

Like 50shades? Or just more grown up than your other books??

It's adult, its not quite 50 shades but its not for kids! There's some swearing and references to adult stuff. I got a couple of love stories and a murder mystery on the go as we speak.. see how they go as well as book 3 for kids.. so I like to be busy!

                    Re: pseudonyms and copyright

I used the name on my birth certificate and an agent said ‘how did you come up with such a weird pseudonym’!!!!
Most of the stuff I do is ‘ghosting’ and I never needed an account in any name other than my own. If I do get stuff published under my pseudonym any payments including royalties (aka hen’s teeth) are paid in my real name and there is absolutely no conflict or issue.
One thing I will advise is keep every receipt for everything from rubber bands to printer ink because one day when you are famous HMRC will send you an income tax estimate for some ridiculous amount dating back to the year dot. You can subtract all your expenses from any demands so do keep EVERY receipt.
