  • British Gas, bill

I hope someone could give me some advice on where I legally stand with a British gas bill,
Briefly up until last November i lived with my wife in our own home, she left in November and hasn't paid any mortgage or bills for our home since, some bill were in my name and some in hers the gas bill was only ever in her name but was paid from our joint account by dd, the joint account has been closed down so I assumed this was one of hers as I was paying all the rest
At the beginning of the year the gas bill arrived in both our names (married) at Easter they came only in my name (she was getting the bills as she would come to pick up her post so she was aware of them)
Now I've received a notice to apply for a warrant of entry to install a pay as you go meter with all associated costs added on
My point is I've never personally had an account with British gas or signed and form or contract with them I'm guessing that she has just added me on without asking me
So how do I stand legally and what should I do now. As there is absolutely no signed contract credit agreement between me and British gas
The people sending letters are called Arvato I assume they are the in house collection dept. The bill is for just over 600
Wich I just don't have due to all other debts she has left me with, at a push I could manage about £50 per month should I call them and offer this?
Im not at war with BG Im just don't have the money, thanks Joe.

Any objection should have been made at the time.

If the bill is in your name and you have never queried it, this is accepting you are responsible for the bill. It may be that your wife added you when she took out the contract, also the fact you paid from a joint account may also be used to say you would have known that you were also responsible for the bill.

The people sending letters are called Arvato I assume they are the in house collection dept.
Avarato are a specialist collection agency who deal with utilities companies, I would suggest you speak directly to BG and see if they can arrange an agreement to pull the debt back!

The bill is for just over 600

Yes, definatly! Be prepared for them to say no because it may be that you use more than £50 energy a month without the arrears! I would suggest that possibly allow a prepay meter until the debt is paid then go back to the quarterly! That way you can agree a set amount (i.e maybe £5 a week) they take off the debt until it's paid!

I know how bad this feels, Atlantic Energy did this to me by not changing my DD then demanding payments of over £200 a month that I didn't have! Speak to them, sometimes they have special circumstances that they can help with!

No promises, but have a read of this.
