• RLP are sending me letters

Ok, so in August i made one the stupidest mistakes of my life, by attempting to shoplift a wallet that cost £9 from TKMaxx.

Im hugely embarrassed by the whole affair, and I don't know what the hell I was thinking. At the time the Police were not called, i was taken into the back office where my details were taken, and 5 minutes later released onto the street. I was told i would receive a fine although i had no idea how much that would be. Since then RLP have been sending me letters (3 exactly), advising me that i have to pay a fine of £147.50.
I understand that what I did was shameful, however the amount of the fine seems extortionate in comparison to the supposed loss incurred by TKMaxx (especially considering the took the wallet off me, and it was still in a perfectly re-saleable condition).

I have been reading these forums and the consensus is that I should just ignore the letters, however the last letter i have received said that the information they hold may be passed to the Police...
This is what concerns me greatly. I am a student in my last year of university, and i am afraid that a charge may affect my position at university. Also, i would really struggle to pay a fine of that size as i don't have a job.

Considering that the Police were not called at the time, would they still be able to knock on my door, arrest me and charge me? (also I live in Scotland, if that makes any difference)

In this situation would i be able to just ignore the letters, or should figure out some way to pay the fine?

Hi Foolish1 to LB

If you have been reading the forums then you should already know that RLP have not been taken seriously here on LB since they lost (dramatically) in court. They do nothing apart from send threatening/begging letters until they eventually give up.

That being said ... I do not think that RLP have the 'power' to get the police involved (that would be up to TKMaxx) and so, I believe their letters are just threats to be ignored! Is there any way you can post up a redacted copy of the letter for des8 and Celestine (and myself :lol to look at? Or email it to me (kati@legalbeagles.info) and I will post it?

Please try not to worry we'll see you through this xx

Please continue to ignore, ignore and ignore some more!

RLP are past masters at pressurising peeps.
If the store did not call the police at the time, why on earth do you think RLP might?
And even if they did do you really believe the police will turn up with a black maria to cart you off over a £9 wallet that he retailer never even lost?

Nothing is going to happen ......... just keep ignoring even if they pass their charges (not a fine) to a debt collector who writes in scary red ink.

I agree ... the wording is so non-comittal it's cringeworthy

Oh dear, they are so desperate to receive a donation............ it's enough to make you weep (not!)
Continue to ignore, this is standard fare from RLP.

I like the third option (it always makes me smile) but all my alternative proposals are unprintable and possibly impossible to perform!

I think your next letter will be from the friendly DCA, BPO ( if they are still using them) - a DCA has no more power than RLP, so can also be filed under ignore. The DCA seem to write once then disappear.
