• day off for new job

Hi, some advice needed please I've been working for a supermarket nearly 11yrs, I'm moveing away & was not able to relocate with my job. So I have been offered another job with a different supermarket. I have given 4wks notice to my current employer, although I think I only needed to give 1wk. My notice period finishes on 21st June 2015, my new employer has asked me to attend an induction on Sat 7th June am I entitled to get that day off to go ? Where do I stand
Any advice is badly needed thanks

Re: day off for new job

Thank you for your reply. I do have holidays oweing. But the problem is getting the shift covered. If I went anyway to the induction what's the worst my current employer could do ? Also if I have given them 4wks notice & I only needed to give 1 could I leave earlier ?

What does it say in your contract (regarding notice)?

As for the induction day ... couldn't you call in sick on the day (or just before)? :noidea:

This is the first time I have EVER seen Kati give advice that I would not agree with.

It is NEVER a good idea to throw a sickie in these circumstances, even more so when your employer is aware that you want the day off and it has been decline.

The last thing you want is for any reference to be "updated" to include the information that you have been suspended/dismissed for gross misconduct.

If it is absolutely impossible for you to arrange to attend the induction event during your notice period, your new employer would have to put up with it., IMHO

as I tried to show in my post stevemLS, I wasn't sure if it would work anyway, I was just offering up a suggestion bearing in mind I've never been in this situation myself

just take the day off and let them mark you as absent
if they need cover that's their problem and not yours.
think of number one the new job is more important
Don't let them grind you down

Re: day off for new job

Can you not discuss with the potential new employer to change the induction date to a date when you can get cover at your current work? If you detail your reasons to them maybe they would see it as better that you are doing that than leaving your old employer in the lurch. That is if your new employer knows you are still with your old employer.

Just thinking if someone was coming to work for me I wouldn't like to see them cause problems for their old employer, as one day I might be the old employer.

Re: day off for new job

Ok thank you all for your help. I cannot change induction day as the person doing it goes on holiday for 3,wks after. As for my current employment I've had 2days off sick in 6yrs , no disciplinary's, always on time , they have not been at all supportive . I already have the new job as for leaving my employer in the lurch they r leaving me no alternative. And if the situation arose in my new job I'd hope they would remember what I did for them

Of course they haven't, there a supermarket and care more about profits and meeting their targets - The manager is more concerned with having enough staff in store to ensure targets are met. Its the easier option for the manager to say "No".

I very much doubt they would discipline you for it, as you could hit back at them with unreasonable behavior as they knew you were leaving and needed the day of to attend your induction with the new employer - What they are probably pissed off about is that your going to work for a different supermarket company - They'll sure love that... not.

Just take the sickie, as a doubt your absence record would warrant disciplinary action as you probably haven't had enough days off sick in a 12 month period to warrant them taking action against you anyway!
