  • I'm being payed less that other supervisors in my business , is this fair?

I currently work in a company that has 3 departments , I am the supervisor for my department and I have found out today that I am being payed less than the other supervisors ( was told by another supervisor)

I asked for a rise last year and got told I was "playing a dangerous game "and basically got told to sod off but apparently a fellow supervisor asked for a rise last year and got one .

i have found out today that I am on at least £1 a hour less than the other supervisors and have been for a while , is this fair ? I work hard like everyone else but feel I've been held back and don't get it .

The other day I asked (Before I knew about the pay difference ) For a rise as I havnt had one for 5 years and have been told by my director that I may get a rise , but it depends on if a staff member in my department agrees to drop his hours or not in order to "fund" the rise ( the staff member has been considering this of his own accord for a while)

It's a bit complicated but where do I stand on this ?

Hi Theapples and welcome to Legal Beagles :santa3:

Our employment law experts will be along shortly - do be patient as it's a busy time of year.

In the meantime, I believe (I'm sorry to say) that it's most likely irrelevant what your colleagues are paid and if you want to be paid more and have confidence that your employers recognize that you are worth more then you need to negotiate with them on your terms.

It's always worth referring to ACAS and to your Union, if you have one.

    Good luck!

Not really a lot you can do, as pay rates can be based on experience and years in the role. Basically if the other supervisors has been in the role longer than you and has more experience then his/her pay will reflect that. Pay can also be reflected by skills required too!

Best advice is to stick it out, as it seems the director wants to give you a pay rise, but can not afford to unless another employee takes a reduction of hours. So there's a good chance it will work out for you.

Can i ask, if your female and the other supervisors are male or not?

Well since your all male's then i guess the sexual discrimination angle is a no go then, unless your sexual orientation is different to the other male supervisors - Though am in no way making any assumption of suggestion on your sexual preferences or orientation. Just so we clear! And even if it were, it be difficult to prove that is the reason you are paid less, but it would be a tool you could use in a grievance to your employer!
