  • Help: council tax debt: bristow and sutor

    Hi all
im writing this with a lot lf worry so bear with me I was going to post on mumsnet but they can be quite judge and I already feel shit

Anyway I'm a single parent I work full time but on minimum wage. I work really hard to look after my dd. Anyway a year ago york city council messed me around and they didn't give me a deduction on my council tax debt and I couldn't pay it (I burrowed my head in the sand) and then it got referred to bristow and sutor who have being really aggressive and mean and threatened my dd saying her mum was going to prison she's a timid 15 year old after sudden from bullying. Anyway I contacted council tax advisor submitted all the paperwork and they sent it off to york city council. In the mean time my new council tax bill come and a amount to pay off my debt I have being paying my council tax bill and my debt off since April. I pay £39.48 off my debt. And £88.80 on my CT bill. Anyway today I received a letter from bristow and sutor saying they are going to take money out of my wages I cannot afford this! I can't afford to pay the debt off and CT and a bill to B&S! I'm terribly scared and I have emailed York city council and CT advisors to see what will happen next I will be ringing work to say if they do get a letter then to not send any money from my wages.
what I can't understand is I'm paying the debt off to the council yet B&S want money? What can I do?
    Tia
be kind please and please please don't judge!

Can you remember when B&S first became involved in this? Also if they have visited your home and when this was?

Did you ever start up repayments and then stop again? Or have you agreed to pay so much a month and then paid less?

Do you receive single persons discount for your council tax? Do you receive any other discount for your council tax or any other benefit?

Re: Help: council tax debt: bristow and sutor

            Hi
thanks it was November time last year and then on New Year's Eve they came and they have being coming regularly ever since. I have revived single persons so discount on this years bill but not the bill owe. And I don't revive any other discount on my CT Bill.

I have never started repayments with B&S only with york city council and I have repayed every repayment since April but that is being paid to York City council not B&S. I haven't answered the door thanks your help!

Re: Help: council tax debt: bristow and sutor

Don't worry hun ... I'm sure someone will be along soon!!

Personally I think you should be putting in formal complaints to the council AND b&s about the abysmal way they are treating you!! You are already in a payment plan with the council, so b&s shouldn't be threatening you with anything. They are not allowed to threaten you, they are not allowed to force entry into your home.

Get in touch with the CT dept at your council and lodge a formal complaint. Tell them everything the bully from b&s are saying, and ask to speak to the 'head of department'. Go and see your local MP too - I'm sure s/he will be more than willing to step in and help you!! Contact b&s in writing (copying in the council too) sending it recorded/signed for (approx £2) with a second formal complaint about the people involved.

These bully boy tactics are not right (and are going against the regulations too) they need stopping

Re: Help: council tax debt: bristow and sutor

Log onto B&S website & then log into your account. Have a look at the statement for last year. This will tell you the date any fee was added to your account and the reason for the fee. It will also tell you the amount of the fee. Have a look & come back on here & tell us what they've charged you.

Who is the "council tax advisor" that you keep mentioning? Does the paperwork that they sent off include details of your employer etc?

b&s are pushing too far hun ... they cannot do this!! if you are in a payment plan with the council, then b&s shouldn't even be involved.

Do you and the woman down the road get on well?? It might be worth BOTH of you putting in complaints to the council about the threats from the bailiffs :tinysmile_twink_t2:

oh ... and - don't worry about the stuck up eejits on MN (they aren't worth it)

Re: Help: council tax debt: bristow and sutor

We get on well yeah..she's not the kind for complaining though
                      ive logged on
                      my charges are levving £75.00
                      force charges £200.00
                      van £60.00
and then the council tax debt
                      I owe £800.00 to them

i will defineltly be complaining and after looking at my council tax website for york I think I may be entitled to 50% not 25% I will be ringing up tomorrow for advice.

The council tax advisor are a charity who help solve council tax debt a bit like stepchange. They only sent it to york council and I just put the name of my employer but I didn't put an address or anything or state with company address my wages come from. But it's just the council that have it. Trouble is york city council are bad for replying and sending acknowledgement to people so I suspect they haven't actually told B&S I'm paying my debt off

Re: Help: council tax debt: bristow and sutor

I'm really struggling to get my head around all of this, so please bear with me.

A levy fee for a debt of around £800 should have been around £36. If there were visit fees prior to the levy then that would bring it up to around the £75 mark.

I have no idea what a "force" charge is and have never seen this on a B&S statement before. The £60 van fee is also way,way below what B&S used to charge.

I didn't think B&S collected for York council either?

We really need to get all facts straight before deciding whether a formal complaint or merely a letter would be the most appropriate in this instance. I appreciate Kati is very hot on the "threats" side of things but something isn't right here. If there is a levy on goods, it is doubtful that the council would then enter into a payment plan.

Is there anything else you can add Cheeky Chops, that may help? What are the dates that these fees have been added?
