For Motability vehicles the name that appears on the V5 is that of the person who rceives the Benefit for instance my wifes V5 is listed as:
    Mrs Ploddertom
    Motablity Finance
    Our address

Therefore clear warning should have been when they received the details from the DVLA. Of course there is nothing that gives age or condition but as you have to have DLA Higher Rate to be able to have a vehicle then to me the issue is clear - I could be attending a seriously vulnerable person be they 6 years old or 90 years old.

Yes the same with mine, i was wondering about this, as the insurance is also paid to the named person does that mean that this is also in the name of the child.

A little known fact is that warrants issued against a VRM that is registered to Motability have a specific code that should identify the vehicle as being provided by Motability.

Despite this, the fact remains that the vehicle keeper is under an obligation to ensure that the keeper details are up to date and accurate.

Vehicles provided by Motability are classed as fleet vehicles and, in those circumstances, it is the responsibility of the fleet manager to notify DVLA of any relevant changes.

Insurance on Motability vehicles is on a Fleet Policy held by Motability Finance. It is my understanding those who are allocated Motability vehicles receive a copy of the certificate. Unless there has been a change, there is a £75 excess payable on insurance claims.

I got a policy with mine in my name.. Looking at the motorbility site, I would have expected all the documentation to be in the guardian or parents name including the vehicle documentation.

My son's motability car is in my name - ie it's insured for any driver but in my name and all the "Notices" come to me (a source of some anxiety, btw). He's an adult with SLD, so I would imagine the same would apply to a child, or anyone else without mental capacity/legal responsibility? I wonder how it really does work? :confused2:

Motability vehicles are insured under a fleet policy issued by Royal Sun Alliance (RSA). but you will receive a certificate covering the vehicle leased to you under the contract hire agreement, listing those authorised to drive the vehicle. I agree with you that where a person allocated a Motability vehicle is below the age when they may lawfully drive a motor vehicle on a road, the V5C and other documentation should be suitably endorsed to show they are a minor in law and the name of a parent or guardian appear also.

                    Ms FM.
Are your documents in your sons name and endorsed with yours, or just in yours /

Do you know Andy I don't believe I've looked? (Will attempt to rectify by finding the documents).

But I'm certainly the one responsible, legally, even though he doesn't technically live with us.

It must be in his name somewhere, though, as he's the one that attracts the right to a motability vehicle...:tinysmile_hmm_t2:

You may not have it if you do not have the vehicle but it would be interesting to know exactly what was on the log book

Clearly I have uncovered a 'can of worms' and one that would have been worthy of its own thread. Quite apart from the fact that all warrants have a particular code (to identify that the VRM relates to a vehicle provided under the Motability Scheme) there is a further matter of interest and this relates to insurance.

Supposing that I were to borrow a relative or friends car for the day. The usual position is that unless my friend had contacted her insurance company to add my name to her insurance for the one day in question I would only be covered to drive her car on MY insurance on a 'third party basis’. This is despite the fact that I have fully comprehensive insurance.

The position is NOT the same with a person who who is provided with a car under the Motability Scheme . The insurance (as far as I am aware) ONLY covers the person to drive the Motabilty vehicle and if her or she were to drive another person's car even for just a few hours they are NOT INSURED to do so even on a 'third party' basis. The insurance cover provided by Motability covers the person to drive that car ONLY.

                              Your analysis, Milo, is spot-on.

Where a vehicle is provided to someone under the Motability scheme and the person is unable to drive due to disability or age, then a nominated driver or nominated drivers are endorsed on the fleet policy held by Motability and on the certificate relating to a particular vehicle.

If a nominated driver has no other motor insurance, then they are insured to drive the Motability car only and no other vehicle, even on a Third Party basis.
