    Hi,got a query regarding holidays.
My company had an out of work night out which was optional to go to.At the end of the night they gave out prizes and 5 people won an extra days holiday for work.Don't want to sound a killjoy just seems unfair to those who didn't attend.Thankyou if you can help.

Would you have attended if you had known there would be 'inducements'
Maybe the company did the raffle as a 'thankyou' to those who bothered to go

        Sour grapes methinks

I thought this was a forum I could get advice on a problem that maybe was not legal or fair in the workplace!!!If you take the problem one step further you start giving pay rises to those who did well in the company darts tournament? You have a situation where not everybody can attend for various reasons, disability, logistics, just not wanting to and you have no opportunity to receive these extra work inducements in an out of work activity.Thankyou all for being so helpful,i'm sorry for trip trapping over your bridge:closed_2:

Our bridge is free for anyone to 'trip trap' over (within reason).

As far as answering your query. AFAIK offering inducements (be it days off, extra pay or whatever) is not illegal. The manner in which the inducements were made may not be fair, but that also is not illegal.

Basically an employer is free to make additional remuneration to their employees in whatever manner they see fit. The only caveat is that basic holidays and pay are set by legislation. Anything above and beyond that is entirely at the discretion of the employer.
They were out to get me!! But now it's too late!!

'Fair' and 'Legal' are not necessarily the same thing.

As a newbie, I can see why you might ask, but if I were the employer, I would have seen it as a way of thanking my staff. I cannot see it unfair or illegal to do what they have done. I personally would look on it as a good employer.

You're probably right smiley, but I suppose a lot depends upon whether all the staff were aware of the possible inducements that might stem from attending the night out.

Re-reading this thread I can see OP's point....but,as pointed out by the good folk on here 'fair' and 'legal' aren't always the same thing

It's simply a case of 'you have to be in it to win it' in my opinion.

True, but apparently the OP did not know that there were to be prizes of an additional holiday.

I would agree that for people who could genuinely not attend (sickness and holidays etc) then their name should have gone in the hat so to speak, for the ones who just could not be bothered to turn up then why should they reap the benefits had they known about them or not.
